Summary
REAL Movement is the first book to define true, integrated human motion, within the context of motor control theory. Adam Wolf synthesizes his experiences in the movement industry into a digestible introduction to integrated motion while providing assessment and progression strategies. In this book, Adam dives into understanding the interconnectedness of the body, within a framework where bones move, joints feel or perceive motion, and myofascia reacts to control the movement, all while being governed by the nervous system.
The reader will gain an understanding that the site of the injury typically isn’t the cause of the injury and is often the result of something doing too much because something above or below isn’t doing enough.
Readers are provided with an in-depth discussion on:
- Qualities of integrated movement
- Naming 3-D joint motion
- Introduction to motor control theories
- Current research on fascia and its influence on movement
- Exercise/Movement Glossary
- Additional readings list at the end of each chapter

Dr. Gary Gray, PT, FAFS, CEO at the Gray Institute: We benefit from Adam’s ability to synthesize the best approaches to a practical blend of techniques to create the most optimal environments for each individual.
Max O’Selisch, PT: As a PT with 25-years clinical experience I spent a good portion of my career treating the way I was trained: address the dysfunction locally with a pathoanatomically targeted focus. I was frequently frustrated by my patients’ lack of functional gains despite the fact that I had “fixed the problem”. I was then introduced to Adam Wolf by a mutual friend and colleague and took one of his courses. Adam, through his integrated and holistic treatment paradigm, provided a whole new way for me to view my patients holistically rather than as just a painful knee or shoulder. I cannot recommend
his book any higher or with less enthusiasm. He does a great job of synthesizing multiple disciplines within the movement/motor control/bodywork communities and adding a healthy dose of his own personal style to provide a fully integrated treatment approach to the whole person not just the body part. It has taken some time, concentration and energy to completely reorganize my clinical approach but I have been greatly rewarded by getting my patients better quicker; they are happier with their exercise regimens and my practice has grown.
Patrick Donovan, ATC: Having been a collegiate athletic trainer for 15 years, and having a passion for the rehabilitation of athletes it’s awesome to get an inside look at how Adam treats, rehabilitates, & trains those people who are lucky enough to work with him. Adam clearly lays out his thinking and the why’s of his treatment techniques. Real Movement is the only text out there that discusses applied functional science (AFS) from the Gray Institute and blends it with other treatment techniques to form a well-rounded treatment program. This text is a must for all PTs, ATs, DCs, or anyone who works with people who want to be better either getting back from injury or enhancing performance. I can’t recommend this highly enough and have recommended it to all my athletic training co-workers.
